Cemeteries
PHOTOGRAPHY BY JOHN WADSWORTH
In 1992 I traveled to London to photograph cemeteries. I chose February
when the sun sustains a twilight paleness throughout the day. For five
mornings my driver greeted me with “It’s a good day to roam among the
dead.” Each cemetery was a garden in rebellion against decaying
memorials to eternal life.
In five days I saw one person, an elderly woman, who sat on an ivy-
covered granite bench, gazing upon what could have been her family’s
overgrown “in perpetuity” plot. I envisioned ivy engulfing her, fulfilling the
bankrupt cemetery’s obligation to receive and respect her family’s dead.
